Special Civil War Exhibit, Artillery Demonstrations at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield

A temporary exhibit featuring Civil War field artillery equipment is on display in the visitor center at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. The display includes two cannons, a caisson and a limber, plus other related artifacts.

"Artillery played an important role in the outcome of the battle," said Chief Ranger John Sutton. "Both sides used artillery to bolster their defenses and to strengthen their attacks."

The exhibit will be displayed through August 7, 2009.

Artillery firing demonstrations are scheduled during the year on the following dates and will take place on the hour:

  • July 5: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • July 18: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • August 18: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • September 7: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All demonstrations will take place at tour road stop number 5 and are subject to weather and volunteer availability.

There is no charge to view the exhibit; however the standard entrance fee of $5 per adult or $10 per family will apply for persons wanting to tour the battlefield.

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield preserves and commemorates the first major battle of the Civil War in the West. Administered by the National Park Service, the 1,750-acre battlefield is located 10 miles southwest of Springfield, Missouri at ZZ Highway and Farm Road 182.
