Battle Commemoration Aug. 8-10 at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield

Living history presentations will highlight the schedule of programs commemorating the 148th anniversary of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek Aug. 8-10.

The role of Missouri State Guard in the battle will be featured during special weapons firing demonstrations and drill at tour road stop 5. Up to twenty volunteers will present programs at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Edward’s Cabin on the Wire Road will also be open with volunteers setting up a field camp at historic site of General Sterling Price’s headquarters.

Programs on photography in the Civil War will be presented at the Ray House at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Douglas Harding from St. Louis will exhibit a photographer’s wagon and photography equipment.

Volunteers will also provide tours of the historic Ray House, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

At 10 a.m. on Monday, the 148th battle anniversary program will take place in front of the visitor center. The featured speaker is David C. Hinze, author of "The Battle of Carthage: Border War in Southwest Missouri." A reception and refreshments provided by the Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Foundation will be served in the visitor center immediately following the program.

Between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. living history presentations about the common soldier at Wilson’s Creek will be presented at the visitor center.

Admission fees are waived on August 10.

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield preserves the site of the August 10, 1861 battle for control of Missouri during the early months of the Civil War. The bloody Southern victory here focused national attention on the crisis in Missouri, leading to greater federal military action.

Springfield Regional Opera Kicks off Season Aug. 9

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Springfield Regional Opera, the 2009/2010 season will start off with the critically acclaimed “Love In So Many Words,” from the Los Angeles Opera.

Lori Ann Fuller, Daniel Montenegro and Daniel Faltus, bring operatic love stories to life in a collection of operas greatest hits. The performance will take place at the Springfield Art Museum at 2 p.m. Aug. 9. Ticket information is available at www.sropera.com.

International Opera Stars of “Love In So Many Words," soprano Lori Ann Fuller and tenor Daniel Montenegro, and critically acclaimed pianist Daniel Faltus perform highlights from popular operas and Broadway shows. Having met at Los Angeles Opera in 2006, the trio has performed many dynamic programs together, from small gatherings and benefit shows to full productions. Ms. Fuller and Mr. Montenegro sing passionately, with beautiful voices and electrifying chemistry, while Mr. Faltus plays elegantly, with incredible expression and sensitivity. Mr. Faltus also acts as Master of Ceremonies, bringing the musical stories to life with impeccable translations of language and comic timing. The personalities of all three performers combine to entertain the audience and open up the world of opera and musical theatre to everyone as they perform arias and duets from popular operas such as La Traviata, La Boheme, Carmen, La Rondine, Tosca, L’elisir d’Amore, West Side Story and Candide… just to name a few.

The 2009/2010 season marks a new beginning for the Springfield Regional Opera. To celebrate this landmark season, new president Les Brown, joins new managing director, Marc Whitmore, to change the course of the Opera’s future. In addition to supporting the art of opera in Springfield through educational, outreach and youth artist programs, the new Board or Directors will soon be announcing a five-year performance plan that will boast international and Oscar-winning talent to the Springfield region.

Tickets on Sale for Annual Moonlight Tour at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield

Tickets for the Wilson Creek National Battlefield’s popular “Moonlight Tour” are on sale.

Tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets may be purchased in person at the battlefield visitor center (check or cash) or by mail (check) for a limited time.

Mailed ticket requests must be received by Sept. 3 in order to be processed and returned via USPS mail service prior to the tour. The mailing address is: Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, 6424 W. FR 182, Republic, Missouri 65738, Attention: Moonlight Tour. Please make checks payable to: “Eastern National.”

Tickets are $5.00 each and proceeds are used to cover the cost of the program.

The tour is set for 6:45-10:30 p.m. Sept. 12.

This year’s tour will incorporate several scenes along the Wire Road, and will represent conditions the morning of the battle on Aug. 10, 1861.

Tours of 24 persons will begin at 6:45 p.m. and will continue every 15 minutes until 10:30 p.m. The length of the tour is about 1 1/4 hours.

Visitors are requested to arrive at the visitor center 30 minutes before their scheduled tour time. Visitors will be transported via buses from the visitor center to and from the tour site. Those taking the tour should be prepared to walk a total of 3/4 mile and dress appropriately. Due to the terrain (including a series of wooden steps) wheelchairs and strollers will not be allowed. No flash photography is allowed. Some scenes depict the graphic nature of combat and may not be suitable for small children.

Administered by the National Park Service, Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield preserves the site of the first major battle of the Civil War in the West. The Confederate victory on August 10, 1861, focused national attention on the war in Missouri, and led to greater federal military action. Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield is located 10 miles southwest of Springfield, Missouri, at the intersection of Highway ZZ and Farm Road 182. Tickets on Sale July 31 for C-Street Loftwalk

Commercial Club of Springfield presents the first ever "Parade of Living History, 100 Years of Fashion" at 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge, as a feature of C·Street's 12th Annual Loftwalk. Models sporting fashions from 1850-1950 will remain on the street populating the storefronts, lofts and sidewalks of Historic Commercial Street.

One of the featured open "lofts" is the Jefferson House; loftwalkers cross the footbridge into the Woodland Heights Neighborhood to see this spectacular restored Victorian Painted Lady and meet her artistic owner. Five additional lofts and their eclectic uptown residents complete the self-guided loftwalk between Campbell and Jefferson Avenues on C·Street. Loft entrances will be marked by banners and friendly ticket-takers. Additional "sneak peeks" will showcase lofts available for rent. Many C-Street merchants will be open with "Lofty" specials for afternoon guests.

Advance tickets for C·Street's 12th Annual Loftwalk & Fashion Show are $10. Sales begin July 31 at Pizza House & Big Momma's on C-Street and at Maschino's on South Campbell. Midtown & Woodland Heights Neighborhood Associations are also selling advance tickets; they will keep half of the money they raise through their advance ticket reservation sales as neighborhood fundraisers. Event day tickets are $12 at the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge Pavilion or at Historic Firehouse #2.

Ticket booklets will also be sold during Cider Days on Historic Walnut Street Sept. 19-20. On Sept. 20 a free shuttle will run from Hammons Parkway at Cider Days to the Loftwalk & Fashion Show, connecting these two fun Center City events all afternoon.

Political Cartoonist Exhibition Opens at the Springfield Art Museum Aug. 8.

“The Legacy of Robert Palmer – Part III” opens at the Springfield Art Museum Aug. 8.

The exhibition of this renowned political cartoonist’s original drawings was selected from a trove of more than 1,200 drawings received as a gift from the late artist’s family. The works are a glimpse of social, political and human nature issues that are universal and timeless. The works will be on view through Sept. 6.

Blues Festival Sept. 11-12 in Springfield, Mo.

The 13th Annual Greater Ozarks Blues Festival will be held in Bass Pro Shops lot on Sunshine west of Campbell in Springfield on Friday, Sept. 11th and Saturday, Sept. 12th 2009. The 2009 GOBF event will feature an outstanding lineup of top blues music artists including a "rising star" group from the Isle of Man, a dynamic singer / guitar player and son of a blues music legend from Chicago and a Cajun blues man from Louisiana who is one of the brightest talents in blues music today.

The festival is a major annual music event in Southwest Missouri and the Ozarks drawing over 8,000 blues music fans to the annual show. Title sponsorship for the Greater Ozarks Blues Festival in 2009 is provided by 104.7 The Cave and Mediacom and the event returns to the 2008 event location at the Bass Pro Shops lot.

The 2009 festival headliners include “Tab Benoit” making his second GOBF appearance. The latest Benoit CD release is “Night Train to Nashville”. Benoit has a mellow "Big Easy" personality and is well known for his high energy very intense performances. "Ronnie Baker Brooks", the son of blues music legend, Lonnie Brooks performed with his father for 12 years and is now blazing his own blues music trail. Brooks performs with unbridled energy and passion and his shows have been described as electrifying and exhilarating. His latest CD is titled, "The Torch".

"Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam" make their first trip to Southwest Missouri and the GOBF event building a strong reputation as a "rising star group" in blues music. The power trio has appeared nationally on the "House of Blues Radio Hour" and on the "Tonight Show". Knowles serves as lead singer / guitarist for the group and is being described as a "guitar god in training". The latest CD from the group is titled "Coming Up For Air".

The festival will also feature “Kenny Neal” and his band from Baton Rouge, “Kelley Hunt" from Lawrence, Kansas, a reunion show by “The Cate Brothers Band”,“Reba Russell” from Memphis and “The Underground Blues Division Band”. The GOBF Galaxie Agency Stage will be operating between mainstage performances and will feature “Josh Garrett and the Bottomline” from New Orleans, “Stewart Mann and the Statesboro Revue”, “Steve Smith and the Sneakers” and "Shae".

Tickets for the Greater Ozarks Blues Festival are $35.00 in advance for a two day ticket, $40.00 at the gate for a two day ticket, $20 for a Friday only ticket and $30 for a Saturday only ticket. A “student discount ticket” will be offered to area students again this year and will be available only at the festival main gates on show dates with presentation of a student i. d. card. The student discount ticket prices will be $10.00 for a Friday only ticket and $20.00 for a Saturday only ticket.
